"I enjoyed my calls with my mentee as it allowed me to share insights and suggest ways she could focus on ending her last year strong."

"It is my honor to share with mentees tips on how to make the most of their UCSB experience to lay the groundwork for their future life. And to NOT worry too much about not having an exact road map."

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Will this program take up a ton of time and how long is the commitment?

Mentors and mentees are encouraged to communicate at least twice a month. The level of involvement and length of the relationship will be determined by the mentor and the mentee. Matches are made for the entire year.

2. Who makes the initial contact?

After a mentor and mentee are paired thru the system, each will be notified of one another. We encourage mentees to make the first contact and introduce themselves as soon as they receive corresponding matching information, and to ask their mentors how and when they are available.

3. How will a match be made?

Although they will be able to view “prospective mentors” on the Gaucho Network site, when students sign up for this program, they’ll be matched automatically via the system, which will then notify both the mentee and mentors via email that they have been matched. Industry type, geography and needs are all taken into consideration.

4. Who can I contact if I have any questions/concerns?

Please reach out to alumni@alumni.ucsb.edu or our program director rick@rickmgoldberg.com.

5. What if I want to continue my mentor/mentee match beyond this school year?

You are welcome to stay connected with your mentor/mentee as long as they are willing and able to do so.

6. What if I'm not a Communication Alum or current Communication Major Student?

For 2022 - 2023 school year, we are only accepting alumni and students who have majored in Communication.

For Mentors/Offering Help

7. Do I have to be in Santa Barbara to participate in the program?

You do not have to live in Santa Barbara to participate. You can mentor by connecting with your student via phone calls, email, Zoom, Skype, or FaceTime. We will provide virtual events and discussions for you and your mentee to participate in.

8. What are the expectations as a mentor?

Mentors are to maintain contact with their mentees through email, text, phone and/or video conferencing at least once or twice a month. In addition, mentors provide valuable guidance and insight to their mentees including, but not limited to, discussing professional goals, preparing for graduate school, and working in the real world.

For Mentees/Seeking Help

9. How can I make the most of the program?

Be active! Ask questions, reach out to new people, and check out our resources. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone. Alumni are waiting for you to connect with them. Everyone in our community is here to support you.

10. What are my expectations as a mentee?

Mentees are to clearly define their expectations and goals to their mentors. Like their mentors, mentees are expected to initiate and maintain communication by email, text, phone and/or video conferencing at least once a month. Mentees are encouraged to promptly respond to their mentors.

MEET THE TEAM BEHIND THE UCSB COMM MENTORING PROGRAM

UCSB's Communication Department ranks #6 in the WORLD. You don't want to miss the opportunity to utilize the department with help from UCSB Comm Alumni!

Learn more about our council, here

UCSB COMM ALUMNI COUNCIL

  • The council is a group of 30 UCSB Alumni who graduated from the Department of Communication. As a council, we provide undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to explore their interests in prospective fields, and alumni with the opportunity to share their story and expand their network. We promote confidentiality, accountability, and mature relationships, where mentees and mentors can come away with new knowledge, skill sets and lasting, meaningful relationships.
The COMM Mentoring Program provides a valuable opportunity for joint success by pairing mentors and mentees to collaborate and learn from one another. Undergraduate students will enhance their understanding of various careers, and get advice on how to thrive in academic, professional and social environments. Alumni will serve as coaches, guides, motivators, advisors, and role models. They will greatly enrich their own lives by making a difference in someone else’s. In the process, mentors and mentees will build a community of UCSB alumni and professionals. We hope you join the Comm Mentoring Program on Gaucho Network today!
